General Information of Moina Macrocopa
Moina macrocopa is a crustacean within the family Moinidae. The general name is Red Moina. Moina has gregarious behavior, is found in lakes, rivers, and temporary water sources. They have good resistance to low-quality water, were found in water with completely different water quality, such as wastewater pond from agricultural industry plants and animal farms.
Biology of Moina Macrocopa
- Average age: 5 days
- Adult size: length 0.4-1.8 millimeters (400-1800 micrometers)
- Newly-hatched size: length 0.27-0.35 millimeters (270-350 micrometers)
- Reproduce after 2 days of age
- Both lay eggs and give live birth
- One female Moina gives birth to an average of 63 offspring
Prepare The Equipment
- Moina Macrocopa eggs
- Clear container with about 0.1 gallon (0.38 liters) of water for hatching
- Culture container with a capacity of at least 2.6 gallons (10 liters)
- Aquarium air pump with airline tubing and air stone
- Aquarium air control valve
- Aquarium thermometer
- Aquarium siphon cleaner
- Fine-mesh fish net
- Heat lamp (Optional)
- Chiller (Optional)
Recommended Water Sources
-
Tap Water: Many water supplies use chlorine for disinfection, which can be reduced by letting the water sit for at least 48 hours with strong aeration. If you already use this method for your aquarium, you can use water prepared the same way for hatching. However, some tap water contains chloramine, so you should test the water and use a suitable water conditioner to remove it.
-
Aquarium Water: Another good option, especially if the water comes from a healthy, well-maintained aquarium.
-
Natural Water Sources: Water from ponds or lakes can also be used, as long as it is clean and free from pollutants, parasites, and harmful organisms.
Note:
- Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 8.0
Optimal Environmental Conditions
Place an aquarium thermometer in the container to monitor the water temperature. Keep the water temperature between 77–86°F (25–30°C). If you live in an area where the temperature is already suitable, you may not need a heat lamp or chiller. The hatching location is also important. It’s best to hatch the eggs indoors to prevent the spread of potentially invasive species and maintain a stable water temperature.
How to Hatch Moina macrocopa Eggs Step by Step
Fill the hatching container with water. Carefully open the microtube and gently sprinkle the eggs into the water.
Add aeration to the water. At first, set the air control valve to a low level to prevent too many eggs from being pushed toward the edges of the container by the water movement.
After adding the eggs to the water, most eggs will hatch within 3 days. If you don’t see any hatching after 3 days, continue waiting for up to 10 days. If no eggs have hatched after 10 days, the remaining eggs are unlikely to hatch.
Newly hatched Moina are extremely small, making them difficult to see with the naked eye.
You can use a flashlight in a dark room to check for hatching. Shine the light along the edges of the container and look for tiny moving shadows or organisms.
If The Eggs Don’t Hatch

How to Culture Moina Macrocopa Eggs
Transfer the newly hatched Moina to a larger container of your preferred size. A container with a capacity of at least 2.6 gallons (10 liters) is recommended.

If you use green microalgae as food, add enough to turn the water light green. If the water is still green, do not add more food.

Use an aquarium siphon cleaner to remove about 70% of the water along with the Moina. Place a fine-mesh net underneath to catch the Moina and prevent them from passing through with the drained water.

Once all the Moina have been rinsed off the net, you can pour fresh water directly into the container.
Complete this step quickly, as Moina trapped on the net may dry out and die if left out of the water for too long.
Feed Moina Macrocopa to Your Fish

If the Moina population becomes too dense, you can harvest some and freeze them for later use.
Live Moina are an excellent food source for tropical fish. They are easy to culture when you follow the steps above, and your fish will love them!

Excellent service and product. The parcel was well packed and tracked. The eggs hatched as per the instructions and were easy to raise. I only used a small quantity of eggs and now have jars full of Moina. The Killies love them!

I bought these from Amazon and while I waited for them I started their tank. Finally put them in yesterday and 24 hours later and they’ve started to hatch! I put them in a small tank with water from an established tank mixed with distilled water and salty shrimp GH/kH. I also put in some botanicals and cycled media from another tank. Placed a small heater in and have it at 80 degrees. Put some floating plants in too to try to keep the ammonia down. I also have an air pump going at a very low rate. I’m so excited to watch them grow to feed my fish! Great product and so many eggs! I didn’t even pour half of them into my little tank yet. I’ll have eggs as a backup if my culture crashes for many times over.
